Resin bound vs resin bonded: what is the difference?

The names sound almost the same, but resin bound and resin bonded are two different surfaces. They are laid differently, look and feel different, and behave differently in the rain. This guide explains the difference so you know what you are being quoted for.

Resin bound

With resin bound surfacing, dried aggregate and resin are mixed together before laying. The mix is then trowelled by hand over the base to a smooth, even layer. Every stone is coated in resin and held within the layer. Small gaps between the stones make the layer porous.

Resin bonded

With resin bonded surfacing, a layer of resin is spread over the base first, and loose aggregate is then scattered onto it. The stones stick to the resin and the excess is swept off once it has cured.

Which is better for a driveway?

For most homes, we recommend resin bound. It gives a smooth surface without loose stones and, on a permeable base, lets rainwater drain through. That matters for front gardens: government guidance says a new or replacement front driveway does not need planning permission if it uses permeable surfacing or drains to a lawn or border. A resin bonded surface is not permeable, so drainage must be arranged another way. Resin bonded can suit areas where a textured grip is wanted, or where a gravel look is preferred over a smooth one.

How to tell which one you have

Run your hand over the surface. Resin bound feels smooth and stones sit flush within the layer. Resin bonded feels rough, with stones standing proud of the surface, and you may find loose stones at the edges. If you are not sure, we can check at a survey.

Repairs

The two surfaces are repaired differently, so it helps to know which you have. See resin repairs for what we can do.

Common questions

Is resin bonded permeable?

No. The resin layer underneath the stones is solid, so water runs off rather than through. Drainage has to be planned separately.

Which lasts better, bound or bonded?

Both depend heavily on the base and how well they are laid. Resin bonded can lose loose stones over time, while resin bound holds the stones within the layer.

Which do you lay?

We mainly lay resin bound surfacing, as it suits most driveways, paths and patios.
