Resin driveway cost guide: what affects the price
Call now: 020 8138 8420We do not publish a price per square metre, because two driveways of the same size can need very different amounts of work. This guide explains what affects the cost of a resin driveway, so you can compare quotes properly. For a figure for your own drive, call 020 8138 8420 for a free survey and written quote.
1. The size and shape of the area
Area is the starting point, but shape matters too. Lots of curves, corners, steps and cut-outs around drains or trees take longer to edge and trowel than a simple rectangle.
2. The condition of the existing base
This is usually the biggest variable. If your current tarmac or concrete is sound, it may be possible to overlay it, which avoids excavation. If it is cracked, sinking or breaking up, it needs taking out and a new base laying. See driveway resurfacing for how we judge this.
3. Excavation and waste
Digging out an old drive or a front garden produces spoil and waste that has to be removed and disposed of. Depth of dig, the amount of material and how easy it is to load it out all affect the cost.
4. Drainage
Water has to go somewhere. On a permeable base it can drain through. Over an impermeable base, or where the drive falls towards the house, you may need a channel drain, a soakaway or a planted area to take the water. Front garden planning rules also depend on drainage, as our dropped kerbs and planning guide explains.
5. Edging
Resin needs a firm edge to finish against. Options include block, brick, steel or aluminium edging. The length of edge and the material chosen both make a difference.
6. Aggregate and resin
Aggregates vary in type, colour and size, and some blends cost more than others. Resin for outdoor use should be UV stable so the colour holds in sunlight. The thickness of the layer also matters: driveways need a thicker layer than paths.
7. Access and logistics
Narrow side access, no space for a skip, parking restrictions or a long barrow run from the road all add time. We look at this at the survey.
8. Extra work
Steps, a new path, a patio, kerb work or repairs to walls and fences can be added to a quote. A dropped kerb is a separate matter: in Bromley the council builds crossovers and charges for them itself.
Comparing quotes
- Check each quote covers the same work: excavation, base, edging, drainage and waste removal.
- Ask what thickness of resin layer is included.
- Ask whether the resin is UV stable.
- Ask how drainage will be handled.
- Get it in writing.

Common questions
Why don't you show a price per square metre?
Because the base, drainage, access and edging vary so much between drives that a single figure would be misleading. We quote after a free survey.
Is overlaying cheaper than a new base?
Overlaying avoids excavation and a new base, so it usually involves less work. It is only suitable if the existing surface is sound.
Does the survey cost anything?
No. The survey and written quote are free, with no obligation.
